    One part of the Sato-Kagura ("local Shinto dance and song") that thrived during the Edo period was the lion dance, and the Kotobukijishi ("congratulatory lion") that would liven up events like New Year's or other celebrations was particularly popular. They'd snap their jaws and pretend to fall asleep, all accompanied by some light music.
