An Extraordinary Lion Dance with a Lion Performing a Shinto Ritual

  • Introduction

    It is a Shinto purification ceremony where water is boiled in a large kettle at the ceremonial site. The lion sprinkles the hot water over worshippers using a bundle of bamboo to ward off evil, pray for good health and well-being of families, and a good harvest. It is said that when this hot water (known as "yubana") is sprinkled over someone, they will have good health for a year. Drums and flutes are used to accompany the ritual.
