  • Introduction

    A lion dance performance in which the lion plays the female lead is known as Yomeshishi ("Lion Bride") or Shishi Kyogen ("Lion Trickster"). It is mainly known to be performed in the Mikawa and Owari regions. Fuseya's lion is controlled by a man who wears a kimono meant for women with a black crest, and the lion's ears are upright. The Gidayuu reader recites the play as if it were a Kabuki performance, all to the rhythm of flutes and drums. Plays such as Keisei Awano Naruto are performed.
