  • Introduction

    The dance is performed to pray for a good harvest, prosperity for one's descendants and warding off bad luck within the region. The lion head is made from fibers of the Indian coral tree, the body out of a basho ("Japanese banana") and karamushi ("ramie plant"). It is done to the beat of gongs and drums, and acts such as playing catch and rolling over are performed.
